This is the twin to the red striped bowl I featured last month. It’s made by Opalex who manufactured a toughened glass very similar to pyrex. While pyrex will always remain my first love, these Opalex bowls seem to be of a slightly better quality than a lot of the pyrexware I come across. The bowl’s in great nick and would be perfect for a small salad or for serving rice or pasta. You could also use it as a mixing bowl. Very versatile indeed!

After saying earlier this week that I had never heard of Opalex I realised that this lovely striped bowl is also from them! It’s a bit of an odd thing though: I’ve sold quite a few of these bowls before and I’m almost 100% certain that none of them were made by Opalex. The reason I first looked at the maker’s mark on this bowl was because it’s so much more solid (and heavier) than the other bowls like this that I’ve sold. It seems to be made of a much thicker glass, which gives it more of a quality feel. The bowl is in perfect nick, with no scratches or chips that I can see. A lovely piece of vintage kitchenalia in mint condition!

I think that this set of cups from Opalex are just fantastic! I haven’t come across the brand Opalex before, but apparently they’re part of  Arc International who have been manufacturing glassware in France since 1825, and are currently the leading manufacturer of crystal and glassware in the world. I assume they named their milk glass ‘Opalex’ because of its translucent quality that’s similar to the stone, opal. These glasses are in pretty good nick- a few marks here and there, but nothing serious – and I love love love the roses!

Dimensions: 8.5cm in diameter x 7cm high
