Small Murano Vase – SOLD

Small Murano vase

Small Murano vase

You’re not going to get a bunch of flowers into this petite vase, but it would look sweet with a single-stem, or just as a display piece. I love the thick bottomed base and the slightly snobby angle of the lip of the glass, and of course it’s great that it still has its original Murano sticker. Often glass looks like Murano, but without expert knowledge on the subject it’s hard to say with certainty that it’s the real McCoy. With a manufacturer’s sticker there’s no doubting its authenticity. A classic piece of glass in original condition.

Note: There are no chips in the glass, but there is a small mark on the inside of the vase that can’t be reached to clean properly

Dimensions: 20cm tall x 5cm in diameter (at its widest)

Hand-blown Glass Ashtray – SOLD

Hand-blown glass ashtray

Hand-blown glass ashtray

This glass ashtray is beautifully kitsch. The swirls of colour are definitely a bit over the top, but that’s what makes it! There’s a small mark in the glass from where the glass blower finished off the bowl (see pics under ‘more’), but otherwise it’s in perfect condition. The glass looks like it might be Murano, but without an identifying mark I can’t really say for certain, although the quality is definitely there. A nice theatrical piece that will definitely stand out.

Dimensions: 6cm high x 12cm in diameter

Price: R150

Heart Shaped Bubble Ashtray – SOLD

Heart shaped bubble glass ashtray

Heart shaped bubble glass ashtray

You might have heard me say this before, but I really do try and stop myself from buying ashtrays (they’re not very PC these days), but there was no way I could turn down a heart shaped bubble glass ashtray! I’m not sure if it was intended to look like a heart, but that’s the best way I can describe the shape. Form aside, I love this Murano-style glass. I have about four pieces of bubble glass in my own collection – but sadly no pink heart-shaped versions! If you’re not a smoker, this glass looks beautiful as a display item, and can also be used to hold knick-knacks (earings, spare change etc.). There are a few scratches in the glass, but nothing too serious. A truly beautiful piece of glass – I hope it goes to a deserving home!

Murano Sommerso Ashtay – SOLD

Murano Sommerso ashtray

Murano Sommerso ashtray

Even if you abhor smoking you have to appreciate the beauty of this murano ashtray! I think that the word ‘sommerso’ means submerged in Italian, as the name denotes a type of glasswork where designs are submerged in a layer of transparent or coloured glass to create a layered effect. This is the third Sommerso ashtray I’ve had for sale in the past few months, and each time I find another one it really does take my breath away – I think they’re that special! Sadly this ashtray does have a small chip, but I really don’t think it affects the beauty of the piece (just the price!).

Venetian Ashtray – SOLD

Balboa Ashtray

Balboa Ashtray

I’ve been collecting venetian ashtrays for years, and to be honest I think I’d carry on hunting for these beautiful pieces of glass even if I didn’t smoke. I just love the way the different colours look when grouped together. I actually have the same ashtray in blue, and it’s possibly my favourite of all my ashtrays (and I have quite a few!). Aside from its curves, I really appreciate the contrast of the coloured glass against the white interior of the ashtray. A beautiful piece!
