Happy Valley Dinner Plates by Jessie Tait – SOLD

Set of 6 Happy Valley Midwinter dinner plates

Set of 6 Happy Valley Midwinter dinner plates

The design of these plates almost looks like they were intended to be hung on your diningroom wall, and while they may have worked as decor features in a house in the 70s, I think they’d be a bit too twee for a contemporary home. Plus it’d be such a waste not to actually use them. Yes, they’re completely bizarre, but they have a really great matte finish, are a nice gernerous size, and very few of your friends (if any) are going to have landscape portraits on their dinner plates! Add to that the fact that they were designed by one of Britains most famous female designers from the ’50s, and the end result is an intriguing, but very cool set of crockery.

Dimensions: 24cm x 24cm

1950s Umbrella Cake Stand – SOLD

Green Domino Midwinter cake stand

Green Domino Midwinter cake stand

This whimsical cake stand was designed by Jesse Tait for Midwinter in the 1950s. Jesse Tait was the star of British ceramic design from the 1950s to the 1970s. In addition to designing for Midwinter, she also worked with Johnson Bros, another of my very favourite ceramic houses. A number of the designs Tait produced can be found in museum collections across Europe, including the Tait Modern. The pattern on this delightful cake stand is called Green Domino – the pattern also came in blue, and the umbrella shape was used with a variety of other Midwinter patterns. The plate has a bit of crazing, but otherwise is in excellent condition. I sold one of these cake plates when I had my shop a few years ago, and I love it just as much today as I did when I first spotted it. A truly wonderful piece of design history.

Dimensions: 20cm in diameter x 15cm high (incl umbrella handle)

Trio of Midwinter Stylecraft snack dishes

Trio of Midwinter Stylecraft snack dishes

Midwinter first produced their Stylecraft range of kitchenware in 1953. Supposedly Roy Midwinter had visited the US and was inspired by the designs he saw their, so he bought the idea of introducing curves back home to England, which was still very heavily inflenced by the sharp lines of the art deco era. This trio of Stylecraft snack dishes are in excellent condition given their age, although a bit of the silver edging has started to wear away in places. I love the fact that it has a stand – very quirky! Perfect for serving some tasty titbits at your next gathering!

Midwinter Sugar Pot – SOLD

Midwinter Sugar / Preserve Pot

Midwinter Sugar / Preserve Pot

I was filled with delight when I happened across this sugar pot by Midwinter. I’ve never seen this pattern before, in fact nearly all the Midwinter I’ve ever found has been quite plain in design – the opposite of this busy sugar/preserve pot. To the best of my knowledge the pattern is called ‘Lorna Doone’, although some sites refer to it as ‘Brama’ – there’s a very similar pattern by Midwinter that’s also called Brama so I think Lorna Doone is probably correct. The age is also a bit of a mystery with some dealers saying that it dates to the ’30s and others the ’50s, but what I can tell you is that I love it! The spoon is original and the pot is in perfect condition – I don’t think it’s ever been used. What a treasure!

18 Piece Midwinter Espresso Set – SOLD

Midwinter Espresso Set

Midwinter Espresso Set

This Midwinter Stylecraft (Cassandra pattern) set consists of 6 espresso cups & saucers & 6 side plates.  The plates and saucers have an offwhite base with a modernist blue and grey leaf pattern at their centre, and are in excellent condition. The glaze has definitely started to show its age on the inside of the cups though, with one or two being quite badly marked and a hairline crack in the one cup, but nevertheless they are still a joy to sip your coffee out of!

Dimensions: Cups: 5.5cm high x 8cm at their widest; Saucers: 12cm across; Sideplates: 15cm across
