Johnson Bros Golden Cloud tea cups, saucers & sideplates

At first glance this set from Johnson Bros appears a bit plain, maybe even a tad boring, but on closer inspection I think the opposite is true. While it is simple, it’s also slightly quirky – the sideplates are oval, while the saucers are round, giving them a great retro feel. The glaze is called ‘Golden Cloud’ – I love the names Johnson Bros gave their designs! This set is in mint condition with absolutely no chips or crazing to speak of. A classic design from one of England’s most established ceramic houses.

Dimensions: Tea cups – 7cm tall x 9cm in diameter; Saucers – 15cm in diameter; Sideplates – 19cm long x 17cm wide

I love the name of this pattern by Johnson Bros – Snowhite! Johnson Bros actually produced a number of different patterns with this same name, so I’m not really sure what the inspiration was, but it has a very sweet ring to it. I love the 1950s pastel blue of the lids, and the shape of the handles gives them a a very retro feel. There’s a small mark on the inside of the one dish, but otherwise they’re in near mint condition. Perfect for keeping your dinner warm on the table.

Dimensions: 24cm in diameter x 12cm high (with lid on)

I love the name of this glaze by Johnson Bros – ‘Golden Cloud’ – isn’t it lovely? It’s a nice plain piece, with a classic shape to it, and is in excellent nick with only the odd scratch here and there. Perfect for disguising the brussel sprouts from the kids (or me for that matter!) on Christmas day. On a more pleasant culinary note, it could also be used for pouring custard over Christmas pudding. Much more up my street!

Johnson Bros (England) produced their whimsical ‘Floating Leaves’ pattern between 1955 and 1960, but it almost looks like it could have been designed today (testament to a good design). This set of four cups and saucers are in reasonably good nick, with only minor marks in the glaze giving away their age. The cups are quite small, so they’re maybe better suited to espresso than a cup of tea. I have to say I think the pattern is quite lovely – I’m not sure if it comes across in the pics, but the pattern has quite a colonial feel to me. I can picture them being used at a high tea at the Vic Falls Hotel with ladies lunching amongst the palm trees!

Dimensions: Cups – 6cm tall x 7.5cm in diameter; Saucers – 13.5cm in diameter

I became a little obsessed with trying to find the name of this fantastic pattern by Johnson Bros – I seriously must have looked at over 200 images! Johnson Bros was started by the grandsons of the famous pottery house, Meakin, in the late 1800′s. The maker’s mark on the back of this set was in use from 1913, but I think it probably date to the early ’50s (although I don’t know for certain because I couldn’t find anything online – so frustrating! ). The cups and saucers are in reasonable condition, although there are some scratches in the glaze and one or two very minor chips – but for the most part the condition is good. I really think this is quite a special set (and I’m fairly certain it was designed by a very established designer – the reason I was hunting). I love the bands and the combination of colours. A lovely set to display and to use – how much nicer would it be to drink your coffee out of one of these cups than a bulky mug!
