Pair of JAJ Pyrex Bowls – SOLD

Pair of JAJ Pyrex bowls

Pair of JAJ Pyrex bowls

From not having had any pyrexware on Mint for ages, we seem to have had a whole heap of it lately, and nearly all of it seems to be JAJ Pyrex. Along with Fire-King, JAJ is probably one of the biggest names in pyrexware. The company formed out of a struggling glassware company, when James A Joblings (for whom the company is named) bought the license to produce pyrexware from Corning in America. Not only did it save the family business from bankruptcy, but it introduced pyrexware to England where it proved to be a massive success. This pair of neat pyrex dishes is just one of the multitude of patterns and shapes that the company produced until it finally closed its doors in 2007 – not a bad innings! The dishes have no visible signs of wear, and fit neatly one inside the other, so will be easy to store in your cupboard or on display on a shelf.

Price: R120 for the pair

JAJ Pyrex Nesting Bowls – SOLD

5 Jun

JAJ Pyrex nesting bowls

JAJ Pyrex nesting bowls

This set of JAJ Pyrex bowls is incomplete, but I don’t think that you’d know it unless you had seen a set before, or unless, like me, you were lucky enough to own your own set (and I do consider myself very lucky indeed – I love my pink set of nesting bowls!). For starters there should be a fourth bowl that makes up the set – the bowl would have been white with blue flowers, and would haveĀ  been the smallest bowl in the set. Then there’s the middle bowl, which while the same make and design, doesn’t actually belong to the set – it too should be white with blue flowers, not plain blue. But when the bowls are sitting one inside the other you don’t notice the discrepancy (I didn’t!), and when you’re using it by itself no one would be any the wiser! Even when I got home (after paying a packet for the set!) and realised that one of the bowls was the odd man out I wasn’t too perturbed – it’s been absolutely ages since I’ve found a set of these Cinderella* mixing bowls, and evenĀ  incomplete they’re quite striking!

*These mixing bowls are referred to as ‘Cinderella’ bowls because of their shape, which is meant to resemble a glass slipper. One the one hand they have a handle for holding the bowl while you pour, and on the other a narrower shape for a spout.

Note: A complete set of these bowls is currently for sale on ebay for around R800, and the bidding hasn’t finished yet!

Dimensions: Large bowl – 26.5cm in diameter x 11cm tall; Medium bowl – 22cm in diameter x 10cm tall; Small bowl – 18.5cm in diameter x 9cm tall

Price: R360 for the set

JAJ Pyrex Bowl – SOLD

JAJ Pyrex bowl

JAJ Pyrex bowl

I love the minty green of this JAJ Pyrex bowl, it’s just lovely! But it’s a bowl that’s been very well used and it has the scars to prove it – there are a few light scratches in the green paintwork, and the base of the bowl is quite marked, but I still think it’s a good looking bowl, and one that you’ll get plenty of use out of!

Dimensions: 22cm in diameter x 10cm tall

Price: R95

Pyrex Casserole Dish – SOLD

16 May

JAJ Pyrex casserole dish

JAJ Pyrex casserole dish

I love the shape of this JAJ Pyrex dish! Well actually it’s the lid that I really like the shape of – that great bubble design, and the way that it relates to the handles on the dish making it easy to lift. The dish is in pretty good nick – even that terribly kitsch (but quite wonderful!) print is still nice and bold, but the lid has quite a few scratches that aren’t visible in the pics – although there’s no real damage and a bit of wear can be expected with a dish that’s probably in the region of 60 years old!

A great bit of retro pyrexware in reasonably good nick.

Dimensions: 21cm in diameter x 11cm tall (with lid on)

Price: R120

Snowflake Pyrexware Dishes – SOLD

14 Apr

Pair of pyrex JAJ Snowflake dishes

Pair of pyrex JAJ Snowflake dishes

I think it was only last week that I was saying how hard it is to find coloured pyrexware these days, especially these lovely soft pastel colours. I know I must have mentioned it as least a dozen times before, but I really do love my own collection of coloured pyrex dishes, and even for someone who doesn’t cook, I seem to get plenty of use out of them – plus they’re probably the best looking things in my kitchen! I think that these JAJ Snowflake dishes date to the late 1950s. The slightly smaller rectangular dish has a bit of wear to the pattern, and the yellow isn’t quite as bright as it used to be, but it’s still in reasonably good condition, and the oval divider dish is in great nick!

A handsome pair that I know you’ll use time and again, and when they’re not in the oven or microwave they’ll look fantastic on display in your kitchen!

Dimensions: Rectangular dish – 29cm long x 17cm wide x 4.5cm high; Dish with divider – 32cm long x 21.5cm wide x 5cm high

Prices: Rectangular dish – R95; Dish with divider – R120

Large JAJ Pyrex Dish – SOLD

12 Dec

Large JAJ pyrex dish

Large JAJ pyrex dish

I tend to avoid buying white pyrexware, preferring instead the lovely pastel hues that pyrex from the 1950s and ’60s was often produced in, but this large JAJ casserole dish caught my eye! First off it has its original lid, which is pretty rare to find, and in perfect nick nogal. And then you have that great bright orange floral motif which I just love! There are or two small areas where the paintwork has worn away on the flowers, but generally speaking it’s in fairly decent nick.

The perfect dish for for the perfect Christmas dish.

Dimensions: 13cm tall (with lid on) x 22cm in diameter

Price: R120
