Pyrex Rolling Pin – SOLD

JAJ pyrex rolling pin

JAJ pyrex rolling pin

If you’re planning on making mince pies for Christmas and you live in Durbs -or anywhere else with high levels of humidity – then this is the rolling pin for you! It was manufactured by JAJ Pyrex and is designed to be filled with ice cubes or cold water: the idea is that the cold glass will stop the pastry from sticking to the rolling pin, which is apparently a real problem if you’re baking in a hot, humid climate. I bought this rolling pin its original box, but sadly I had to toss the box away as it was just too damaged, but it shows that whoever owned it before really looked after it well. I can see that it has been used, but it’s been exceptionally well cared for and the signs of wear are minimal. The ideal gift for the baker who has everything – or nearly everything!

Dimensions: 35cm long x 5cm in diameter

Price: R145

Collection of Kitchenalia – SOLD

Collection of kitchenalia

Collection of kitchenalia

I have to say, I really like all of these items! Sometimes when I put together groups of kitchenalia, one or two pieces might be a bit peculiar and not that practical (but always interesting!), but this collection is a nice functional bunch – and for the most part, in great nick! The Staffordshire Chef Ware blue and white jug is one of my favourites – it obviously has a very similar look to the TG Green Cornishware range, but is much more affordable, and in my opinion just as attractive. I think that the vintage jug with ridged glass and measurements down the side is actually part of a beater – I’m not 100% certain, but I think that I’ve seen the complete version somewhere on  my travels. But it really doesn’t matter that it’s not complete – it works fine as a jug, and is far sturdier (and way more attractive!) than most measuring jugs you can buy today. The JAJ pyrex rolling pin is a real winner! I’ve sold a few of these pins over the years, but this is a particularly nice example with the original cork stoppers and nice clean glass. The art deco bowl is so sweet with the green accents and sandblasted stripes. There’s some minor damage to the underside of the lid, but it’s not in bad nick considering its age.

A great collection of odds and ends that will hopefully get plenty of use in your kitchen.

Pair of JAJ Pyrex Mixing Bowls – SOLD

Pair of JAJ pyrex mixing bowls

Pair of JAJ pyrex mixing bowls

I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for these JAJ pyrex ‘cinderella’  bowls. I love the way they fit so neatly one inside the other, and I love the design of the handle and the pouring spout which blend seamlessly into the body of the bowl – if you look carefully you’ll see that the one ‘handle’ is wider than the other, and that’s because it’s intended to double as a spout of sorts – so clever! I assume that this set would originally have had another two bowls (these sets normally come in fours), with each bowl a different colour. Can you imagine how great the whole set must have looked together?! And while it’s a little sad that the set’s not complete, the remaining bowls are in great nick! A fantastic pair of bowls that will not only prove super handy, but will also look fantastic sitting on your kitchen shelf or dining room table!

Dimensions: Medium bowl – 9cm high x 19cm in diameter; Small bowl – 8cm high x 15cm in diameter

Price: R150 for the pair

1950s Pyrex Dish with Stand – SOLD

21 Jun

1950s Snowflake pyrex dish with stand

1950s Snowflake pyrex dish with stand

This was a very exciting buy for me – it’s the first piece of pyrexware that I’ve bought in its original box (and I’ve bought a heck of a lot of pyrex!). Sadly the box is pretty moth-eaten and needs to be tossed, but it was still very cool to see how it was packaged back in the day. Despite being stored in its original box the dish and stand have both been used before – there are some faint scratches on the base of the dish, and the candles have definitely been burned a few times – but it was clearly a well-loved piece to have been so well cared for. A classic piece of pyrexware (you’ve got to love that stand!) in near mint condition.

Dimensions: Dish measures 33cm long x 22cm wide x 8cm high; Stand measures 36cm long x 20cm wide x 10cm high

Price: R180

Snowflake Pyrex Dish with Lid – SOLD

20 Jun

JAJ Snowflake pyrex dish

JAJ Snowflake pyrex dish

It’s been a while since I had a good run of pyrexware, so I was very happy when I found this yellow snowflake pyrex dish the other day, with its lid nogal! There’s some wear to the edges of the dish, but given that this pattern dates to 1956 it’s not suprising that it’s not in mint condition. A handsome, functional piece in one of my very favourite pyrex patterns.

Dimensions: 29cm long x 17cm wide x 7.5cm high (with lid on)

Price: R120
