Pair of Retro Ceramic Vases – SOLD

Pair of retro ceramic vases

Pair of retro ceramic vases

I’m equally in love with both of these retro ceramic vases! The blue vase is from SA pottery house Drostdy, and I think would be quite a prize for any Drostdy collector. Despite being quite small, it stands out for its unusual blue glaze, and shallow boat-style shape. The taller matte brown vase with the yellow interior has no maker’s mark to speak of, although the number 187 has been painted onto its base. I don’t know enough about ceramics to say with any amount of certainty, but something about this piece reminds me of some of the West German ceramics I’ve seen over the years – but that really is a bit of a pot shot! While the Drostdy vase is in near mint condition, this vase does have some wear to the glaze in the form of a few scratches. The inside base of the vase is also slightly stained, but it’s such an unusual piece that I don’t think the wear detracts too much from the attractiveness of the design. A great pair for a lover of all things clay.

Dimensions: Small matte brown vase – 16cm tall x 10cm wide; Small blue Drostdy vase – 30cm wide x 7cm tall

Price: Small matte brown vase – R95 ; Small blue Drostdy vase – R110

Retro Ceramic Ashtray

Vintage Drostdy ashtray

Vintage Drostdy ashtray

There’s something really quite lovely about this ceramic Drostdy ashtray! I think that it’s probably the combination of that lovely blue glaze and that beautifully rounded base that gives it such a satisfying shape. And of course it’s great that it’s a South African piece of pottery and in such great nick! A friend of mine sent me the following quote the other day and it seems appropriate to use it here (thanks Smile!):

“It’s a terrible thing to smoke – smoking kills, is bad for one’s skin, hurts unborn babies, etc. – but the admiration of an ashtray as a handsome design object can be such a pleasure.”

Set of Small Drostdy Dishes – SOLD

12 Oct

Stack of 4 small Drostdy plates

Stack of 4 small Drostdy plates

The South African Motor Assemblers and Distributors (SAMAD) produced their first Studebaker car at their factory in Uitenhage in 1948. SAMAD were also responsible for assembling the first VW beetle in SA in 1951, a car which up until that point was virtually unknown in the country. The company stopped the production of Studebakers in 1965, so presumably these little Drostdy promotional dishes date to sometime between 1949 and 1965, but my guess is that they were probably made in the early 1960s. A great set of collectible dishes that would look great hanging on a wall or used as snack dishes for peanuts or olives (without the olive oil, otherwise it might get a bit messy!).

Price: R120 for the set

Pair of Retro Drostdy Bowls

3 Jul

Pair of pink ceramic bowls

Pair of pink ceramic bowls

I’ve called these two bowls a ‘pair’, but I don’t think they were originally sold together. They’re both by South African ceramic house, Drostdy, but the maker’s mark on the smaller bowl is barely legible and appears to be slightly different, implying that they were manufactured at different times. That being said, they do work exceptionally well together -  their glaze is the exact shade of pink, with the only difference being that the smaller bowl is two-tone, with the outside of the bowl having been glazed in a matte cream. What really brings them together though, is their unusual assymetrical shapes. Aren’t they just great! The larger bowl has some black marks on the inside base, but these are a result of the manufacturing process and weren’t caused by wear and tear. The smaller bowl appears to be in mint condition. The perfect bowls to show off your marinated olives and homemade hummus!

Note: These are quite petite bowls so please pay attention to the dimensions below

Dimensions: Medium bowl – 17.5cm long x 12.5cm wide x 5cm high; Small bowl – 11cm long x 9cm wide x 4.5cm high

Price: R150 for the pair

Ornamental Drostdy Bowl – SOLD

20 Jan

Ornamental Drostdy bowl

Ornamental Drostdy bowl

This dish from Drostdy (SA) has the most beautiful shape to it – so fluid! And I love the soft turquoise glaze. I don’t think it can serve any purpose, other than being decorative, but sometimes we need to surround ourselves with beautiful objects – it’s good for our mental state! As far as I can tell the bowl’s in mint condition. I think it would look fantatsic displayed on a clean-lined sideboard, or on a small side table. A true delight!

Dimensions: 28cm long x 10cm wide x 8cm high
