Sadly we don’t have a great deal of fantastic ceramic houses in South Africa, but in my opinion Continental is definitely a name that we can be proud of. I must be honest, I’m not a massive fan of the Continental ceramics you can buy today, but back in the day they produced some interesting designs, and of course their 1960s pastel collections are lust-worthy! I’m guessing that this set of four cups and saucers dates to the ’70s. I love the fact that the saucers are so deep, and I really like the unusual shape of the cups. Plus that’s a pretty serious retro pattern that they’re showing off. There’s some wear to the rim of the cups where the clear glaze has discoloured, which is unfortunate, but not the end of the world.

Dimensions: Cups – 9cm in diameter x 7cm tall; Saucers – 15cm in diameter

Continental teapot

I’ve always had a soft spot for these retro Continental (SA) teapots. I love the way the lid sits flat on the pot, and the way the colour of the glaze separates the spout from the body of the pot, making a feature of the spout. I think this style was popular with Continental in the early ’60s. A great design 50 years ago, and it still looks great today!

Continental soup bowls

I really love the shape and pattern on these bowls from Continental! I think that they’re probably meant to be used for soup, but I suppose you could use them for anything really. They’re part of  a larger set, the serving dish of which I featured last month. Most of the bowls are in excellent nick, but there are a few marks on one or two fo them (see pics under more).

This serving dish from Continental (SA) has the most fantastic ’70s-style pattern. Add to that a beatifully sculpted lid and you have one stylish dish! Plus it’s in near-perfect nick. A real winner!

Small Continental milk jug

I wouldn’t normally buy a single milk jug (it’s nice to have a set), but I had such an overwhelming response to the last lot of Continental I sold that I thought it was worth putting up this lone jug. It’s the smaller of the milk jugs manufactured by Continental, perfect for tea for two (or three), and is in excellent condition. Make this gem the start of your retro Continental collection!
