Art Deco SPC Water Jug – SOLD

24 Apr

Art deco SPC water jug

Art deco SPC water jug

I paid a fair bit for this water jug, primarily because I really love the ridged handle – an odd reason to buy something I know, but it’s details like this that are so often missing in contemporary design. The jug is silver plated copper (SPC), which to me looks to be the same finish as EPNS, but perhaps someone with a little more knowledge would be able to explain the difference? I assume that it’s just a slightly different process that’s followed. The inside of the jug was either never plated or the plating has worn away, and there are some areas where the copper is starting to show through. There’s also a scratch on the side of the jug (see pics under ‘more’), but it’s in better nick than most of the silver plated items I come across. This would make a beautiful vase for flowers, or use it as it was intended, as a rather posh water jug.

Dimensions: 18.5cm tall x 13.5cm in diameter (at its widest)

Art Deco Mirror – SOLD

20 Apr

Art Deco beveled heptagon mirror

Art Deco beveled heptagon mirror

One of the advantages to running the sort of business I do is that now and again I get to circulate my furniture, or in this case mirrors. I try not to do it too often because if you’re constantly rearranging things your home can end up with no sense of cohesion (does that make any sense?), plus if I kept all the best items for myself I wouldn’t have a business to run! But the other day I found an old bathroom cabinet that was shouting out my name, so I just had to find somewhere for it to go. To make way for this new love, I have to part with the last of my great loves – art deco mirrors. When I first moved into my house I think I had about 5 of these beautiful mirrors, but one by one they’ve had to move on for other obsessions, and this lovely heptagon mirror is the last to say goodbye. The chain is original, so it’s a bit corroded (but still strong enough to hang) and there are some areas where the silvering is wearing away. There are also two scratches that don’t show up in the photos, but they can’t be that obvious because I only noticed them when I took the mirror down. A truly beautiful piece that I’m very sad to be parting with.

Art Deco Hanging Light – SOLD

Art deco chrome and marbe glass light

Art deco chrome and marbe glass light

In case you haven’t picked it up by now, I have a bit of a thing for the art deco period. There’s just something about the geometric lines and considered curves that does it for me, and I particulalry like the lighting from this period. I have the nicest wall mounted deco fitting in my entrance – it’s just plain white with chrome bars, but it looks great. And if I had the space I’d hold onto this beautiful marbled light too. The rod is original, but it’s been re-chromed so is in much better nick than most of the deco lights I see. The rod is also much longer than most of the lights you can buy today, which means you need quite a high ceiling, but it also means that it makes much more of a statement. A great example of art deco design in excellent condition.

Dimensions: 81.5cm long (from end of glass to end of ceiling cup) x 20cm in diameter

EPNS Art Deco Serving Dish – SOLD

13 Apr

EPNS art deco serving dish

EPNS art deco serving dish

Sadly the silver plating on this art deco serving dish is a bit tired. The plating has corroded in areas, and the lid of the dish is a bit scratched, but it’s such an unusual shape that I just had to take it home with me! I love the way the lid and the dish fit together so seamlessly, and just look at those scalloped handles! A truly beautiful piece of design.

Dimensions: 28cm long x 16cm wide x 4cm high (with lid on)

Small Art Deco Mantle Clock – SOLD

13 Apr

Art deco Elco bakelite clock

Art deco Elco bakelite clock

I have to admit that I’ve never heard of Elco before. The little bit of information I can find on them, says that they were most famous for their radios – clock making almost seems to have been a sideline business for them. Most of the references I’ve found say that this electric clock was manufactured in the 1930s, so it has a fair bit of age to it. It has has a strong art deco feel to it, with its bakelite case and deco-style ‘pillars’ on either side of the clock face. The clock is in excellent condition -  there are some minor scratches, but nothing too serious. I tested it over night and it seems to keep perfect time. All-in-all a winning piece!
