Silver Plated Jug – SOLD

3 Feb

Silver plated water jug

Silver plated water jug

This silver plated jug has been very well loved in its time – so loved in fact that a lot of the silver plating has worn away – which is a great pity as it really is somewhat of a masterpiece. Just look at that beautifully sculpted spout! It’s a very solid piece (weighs a good kilo or two) with great art deco lines. Even with the wear and tear it’s a still a very handsome piece and would look oh-so-glamorous at a Sunday afterrnoon brunch.

Soup Tureen with Ceramic Ladle – SOLD

Grindley soup tureen with ladle

Grindley soup tureen with ladle

It’s very rare to find tureens with their ceramic ladles still intact, so I was very excited when I came across this set by Grindley that dates sometime between 1936 and 1954. The pattern is called ‘Chameleon’ in reference to the multi-coloured edging that’s so striking. I know it’s completely over the top and definitely won’t be to everyones’ taste, but you have to appreciate it for its bold design – and the combination of the colours really is quite beautiful. It’s a large piece with a heavy price tag (I paid more for this tureen than I normally sell them for!), but it’s a special piece and well worth it. There’s a slight mark on the inside of the bowl, but other than that it’s in perfect condition. A great piece of pottery that’s sure to get your dinner guests’ tongues wagging!

Dimensions: Tureen – 25cm in diameter x 14cm high; Ladle – 24cm long x 10cm in diameter

Art Deco Wooden Collage – SOLD

Art deco wooden collage

Art deco wooden collage

This is a very special picture indeed! It depicts what can I only assume is a 1930s flapper. The portrait of the girl’s face looks to be quite young, but the headpiece looks fitting for an older lass, so I’m not really certain if this is meant to be a child or a young woman. It’s been beautifully executed using different types of veneer. I like the subtle use of colour, and I just love the way the eyes have been ‘drawn’ – just a few lines creating the sweetest expression. There’s a small amount of wear and tear and very slight damage where the screws on the back of the wood have pushed through, but given it’s age it’s in remarkable condition. I doubt any of us will see anything like it anytime soon. A masterpiece that I would be oh so proud to display in  my home.

Art Deco Shaving Mirror – SOLD

Art deco make-up/shaving mirror

Art deco make-up/shaving mirror

I must be honest, I wouldn’t have known that this was a deco piece just by looking at it – despite its wear it almost seems too clean, plus it doesn’t look that different to some of the mirrors you can buy today, but I think that’s probably because the new mirrors are based on old designs that have been around for eons. When I picked up the mirror though, I could tell the difference – this is a nice solid piece, which is quite different to the contemporary versions that generally feel a bit tinny. Plus I bought it from a collector who knows her stuff and she’s certain that it’s art deco in period and that’s good enough for me! There’re some signs of age on the metal, and the silver on the glass is a bit marked in places, but overall it’s in very good nick. This is the perfect mirror for a gentleman’s bathroom, or alternatively display it on a dressing table and use it as a make-up mirror.

Dimensions: 36cm tall x 20cm in diameter (across the mirror)

Art Deco Sugar Bowl – SOLD

30 Jan

Melba Dolly Varden sugar bowl

Melba China Dolly Varden sugar bowl

Dolly Varden, the name of this Melba china pattern, was a character in Barnaby Rudge, a Charles Dickens novel published in 1839. The term ‘Dolly Varden’ is most often a reference to a style of dress (presumably worn by the Dickens character) that involves a brightly patterned dress with an overskirt gathered up and draped over a separate underskirt.  I think that the illustration works beautifully on this art deco sugar bowl that dates to somewhere around the early 1930s. There is a small amount of wear to the pattern, but there are no chips or cracks in the bowl itself . I love the way the lady’s scarf floats up and over the side of the bowl – very clever design, and the slightly scalloped edge of the bowl is also a great feature. A whimsical piece that would look great as part of an eclectic tea set.
