Alfred Meakin Cups & Saucers

The maker’s mark on these Alfred Meakin coffee cups dates the set to sometime after 1945, although I think it’s most likely that they were manufactured around the 1960s. I love the pattern that’s repeated on the cups and the saucers, both of which are in very good condition. I’m always amazed at how well retro design translates today, and I think that this set is the perfect example of how good design stands the test of time.

Dimensions: Cups – 7cm in diameter x5.5cm tall; Saucers – 12cm in diameter

Alfred Meakin Casserole Dish

Alfred Meakin Casserole Dish

This casserole dish from Alfred Meakin has the prettiest shape to it! The flowers that make up the pattern look to me to be nasturtiums – my very favourite thing about this dish is the placement of the nasturtiums on the lower half of the dish – it reminds me of some detail on an old building (almost like pretty cornicing). With the exception of a bit of the silver edging having worn away, this casserole dish is in perfect nick.

Pair of Alfred Meakin Casserole Dishes

Pair of Alfred Meakin Casserole Dishes

There are certain names in tableware that I will nearly always buy, and Alfred Meakin is near the top of that list. This pair of casserole dishes decorated with bulrushes are in near-perfect nick with no chips or marks to speak of. The makers mark dates to 1945, but I’m not sure how long they continued using this particular stamp for. I love the simplicity of the shape and the muted tones used in the decoration. An excellent example from this iconic house of ceramics.

Dimensions: 13cm high (with lid on) x 20cm in diameter at its widest

Price: R120 each (ONE SOLD)
