Pair of Johnson Bros serving dishes

I love the name of this pattern by Johnson Bros – Snowhite! Johnson Bros actually produced a number of different patterns with this same name, so I’m not really sure what the inspiration was, but it has a very sweet ring to it. I love the 1950s pastel blue of the lids, and the shape of the handles gives them a a very retro feel. There’s a small mark on the inside of the one dish, but otherwise they’re in near mint condition. Perfect for keeping your dinner warm on the table.

Dimensions: 24cm in diameter x 12cm high (with lid on)

Enamel Fridge Tray – SOLD

Enamel fridge tray

Enamel fridge tray

I’m not really certain what you would use this enamel fridge tray, but it’s such a lovely piece of vintage enamelware that there was no way I was walking away from it! It has such a great ’50s shape to it, and I love the ridged bottom and the metal strip where the writing’s worn away. I suppose you could use it as a deep baking tray (as far as I know heavy enamel like this would be oven-proof), or return it to it’s original purpose and use it in your fridge – I used to have one that I stored all my bottles and jars in. And if neither of those uses appeal to you it could also serve as herb planter. There’re a few patches where the enamel has worn away (see pics under ‘more’), but it still has plenty of life left in it. Whatever you choose to use it for I’m certain it will make its new owner very happy!

Vintage Electric Clock – SOLD

26 Jan

Metamec electric clock

Metamec electric clock

Metamec is one of my very favourite makes of vintage clocks – they were prolific producers of time keepers during the 1950s, and all of the models I’ve been lucky enough to find have had such great style to them. While it’s always nice to have a bit of colour, this more sedate version is probably quite practical in terms of matching existing décor schemes.  And while it is quite a plain piece, the font of the numbers and the convex glass give it as much style as it needs. An ideal bedside clock that keeps perfect time!

Note: the carriage of the clock has yellowed slightly with time

Dimensions: 14cm high x 14cm wide x 7cm deep (incl movement)

1950s Electric Wall Clock – SOLD

Smith's Sectric electric wall clock

Smith's Sectric electric wall clock

Looking at the style of this clock from Smith’s Iwould have thought it dated to the 1940s, but according to Museum Victoria who have one of these clocks as part of their horology collection, it was manufactured in England in 1955. It’s one of the nicest deco clocks I’ve come across – I love the fan detail in the corners, and the mint green plastic case is fantastic! The red of the second hand contrasts beautifully with the soft green. I kept the clock running for a good while and it keeps perfect time. For those of you who aren’t familiar with electric clocks, it needs to be pointed out that these types of clocks have to be plugged into a socket (i.e. they’re not battery operated). In the past I’ve converted these clocks to quartz, but a clockmaker recently refused to convert a Smith electric clock for me – apparently the movements are quite impressive, and it’s a great shame to remove them – so I thought I’d respect the clockmaker and leave it intact.  There’s some very minor wear to the metal frame, but other than that this clock is in near perfect condition. A truly beautiful piece that would look fantastic in a contemporary setting.

Pyrex Coffee Percolator – SOLD

16 Jan

Pyrex coffee percolator

Pyrex coffee percolator

Most of the sites I’ve looked at say that this vintage pyrex coffee percolator dates to the 1950s, although looking at its condition I would have thought it was a bit later than that. I sold one in June last year that was also in very good nick, but the strainer on the last one I sold was a bit worn – this one is pretty much perfect. These pots seem to vary hugely in price, going from anything between $25 to $100! I can only assume it’s the condition of the pot that determines the price. I love the simplicity of the design, and the fact that the internal parts are also made from clear pyrex – it gives it a bit of a science lab feel! An ultra stylish coffee pot in mint condition.
