I’d never heard of Otagiri before finding this crazy teapot, but it would seem that they have quite a following and are considered fairly collectible. A lot of the images I’ve found are for character teapots and milk jugs in the shapes of owls, cats, pigs – a variety of animals – so clearly this was a popular line for them. The company closed in the mid ’90s, and I think that this cow teapot was manufactured about 15 years before then, sometime in the early 1980s. It’s in great nick – it even has its original foil sticker, so I think it was probably kept for display purposes only. A quirky teapot that’s sure to get one or two remarks the next time you have friends round for a cuppa!

First aid tin

I very seldom buy tins – I find old tins frustrating to open, and wonder what people would actually store in them, but this first aid case was just too cool to pass up, plus it clearly has a purpose which makes it much more attractive in my mind. It’s handy to keep a few medical supplies in your kitchen (an old doctor friend of mine did this and it made so much sense – no running to the bathroom when you burn your hand on the stove), and storing them in something funky like this tin makes the idea that much more attractive. There’s some wear and tear to the paint work, and the lid’s a bit sticky to open, but it’s still functional and in a lot better nick than most old tins.

Denby lidded dish

Denby has a long proud history in England. The company first started producing pottery in 1809 when a clay deposit in Derbyshire was found to be of a very high quality, and continues to be a prolific manufacturer of stoneware pottery today. This brown and blue Homstead pattern was introduced in 1948 and was popular right through to the ’80s. Looking at the backstamp I think that this piece probably dates to the 1970s. It’s in pretty good nick, with no chips or cracks to speak of, although there are some scratches on the lid of the dish. A handsome, practical piece that can go from your oven straight to the dinner table.

I think that this is probably the most serious heater that I’ve ever sold – it’s much larger than most of the heaters I find, and it’s a fair bit older – most of the sites I’ve read say that it dates to the 1930s, which makes sense given that it looks like the cover is made from bakelite. I haven’t turned it on for some time now (I bought it in the heat of summer so it didn’t make sense to sell it then), but from what I remember it has this great orange glow when it heats up, which offsets its rather sombre appearance. I love the great retro shape – the way it kind of leans backwards, and the bakelite cover has an almost faux wood look to it. The brass control dial is also a really nice feature. There are some scratches on the cover and the back enamel case is a bit corroded, but it’s not in bad nick given that it’s close to 80 years old!

I was so excited to find this mirror the other day! Recently I’ve sold off the last of my own beveled mirrors, and I have to admit that I was a little sad because while they don’t go with my decor at the moment, you never know what the future holds and I was beginning to worry that I wouldn’t be able to find a replacement if I ever wanted one – it’s become quite difficult to find art deco mirrors at reasonable prices. So this mirror gave me renewed hope! It’s a lovely example with the most beautifully beveled edge. I don’t think it shows up that clearly in the photos, but the mirror is beveled at unusual angles – instead of a consistent bevel running along the edge of the mirror, the mirror is cut at angles making it that much more interesting. I particularly like the little half-moon beveled edge at the base of the mirror. There’s some spotting on the glass and a few scratches here and there, and I’ve had to replace the chain, but overall it’s not in bad nick for its age. A beautifully crafted piece of glass that would look great in any home!
