Tapestry of Boy and Girl – SOLD

28 Sep

Tapestry of young boy & girl

Tapestry of young boy & girl

This isn’t the most intricate of tapestries, but the story it tells is so sweet! The frame isn’t terrible, but it could maybe do with something a bit more exciting. I think it would look lovely in a child’s bedroom!

Dimensions: 26cm wide x 31cm long

Price: R95

Tretchikoff Print: The Dying Swan – SOLD

3 Aug

"The Dying Swan" by Vladimir Tretchikoff

"The Dying Swan" by Vladimir Tretchikoff

Even if you’re not a fan of Tretchikoff I can’t see how you wouldn’t be able to appreciate the beauty of this painting, The Dying Swan, that was painted by the artist between 1949 and 1951. Tretchikoff, who died in 2006, was one of the 20th Century’s most successful artists and has been likened to Picasso in terms of the number of prints that exist of his work and the commercial success he achieved whilst alive. However, despite being fairly prolific, Tretchikoff prints have become harder and harder to find, and in turn more and more expensive to buy. So when I came across this wonderful print last weekend I was very excited! I have a print of Ballerina by Tretchikoff in my spare room, and while it’s also incredibly beautiful, I don’t think it touches side on The Dying Swan, which is so expressive it makes me a little sad to look at – truly.

Please note: The print is in good condition, but the frame could definitely do with a coat of paint

Dimensions: Frame -48cm wide x 41cm high; Print – 29cm wide x 22cm high

Copper Relief Art – SOLD

9 May

Copper relief picture of proteas

Copper relief picture of proteas

Although you do find copper art from Asia and other parts of the world, for some reason this quirky art form was very popular in South Africa. I’ve seen countless numbers of these pictures over the years, but most of them are a bit too kitsch, even for me! But when I saw this fantastic depiction of South Africa’s national flower, I thought it was definitely worth buying. The colours are much bolder han you normally find, and I think that the way the ‘heart ‘of the protea has been etched is quite beautiful!

Please note: There are some spots on the background copper that don’t show up in the pics, but given that it’s obviously an old piece I don’t think they distract too much from it’s overall appearance

Dimensions: 48cm long x 32.5cm wide

Retro Picture Frame – SOLD

24 Mar

This really is as ‘retro’ as it gets! I’ve never quite seen a picture frame like this before, and I have to say I love it! Sadly the photos really don’t do it justice- it’s very hard to capture the true shape of the frame with my camera which tends to round images, but you get the general idea. The frame can be hung either way (i.e. widest section at the top or the bottom), and I think how you choose to hang it says a lot about your personality! I prefer it with the widest part at the top, but my more unconventional friends prefer it the other way round (I wsa fascinated so I asked a few people!). This frame has been around a good few years, so the paint is slightly chipped in places, but nothing too noticeable. The back is a bit grimey, but fortunately no one’s ever going to see that part of it. I think it would look great with an old family portrait in it (I’m thinking ’70s not late 1800s!).

Dimensions: 44cm long x 35cm at its widest (32cm at its narrowest)

Price: R150

Vintage Print – SOLD

2 Mar

I have a bit of a weakness for palm trees – in fact I bought the property where I built my current home because it had three fantastic palm trees set against an industrial, but rather fantastic view. So this vintage print in a classic moulded frame is right up my alley! The frame is a bit worse for wear with a piece of moulding missing here and there, but nothing that really distracts you from the beauty of the picture. The print itself is unusual in that it almost looks like it’s been printed onto fabric. I’m not sure where this is meant to be (I’m afraid I have absolutely zero knowledge of geography and an embarassingly poor general knowledge!) -  any suggestions anyone?

P.S. Excuse the picture of my toilet (see ‘more’)! I wanted to provide an idea of the size of the frame so needed to show it in relation to something – it actually looked suprisingly nice in the bathroom!
