Ceramic Clown Liqueur Set

Ceramic clown liqueur set

Ceramic clown liqueur set

Yes, I know that this clown liqueur set is completely crazy, but I think it’s crazy in a good way (unless you’re scared of clowns, which a suprising number of people are!). There’s no maker’s mark, but judging by the amount of wear I think it’s probably quite old. Two of the shot glasses have quite a bit of crazing and the glaze has worn away in areas. The glass body of the clown has been glued onto his ceramic feet and the glue is visible through the glass, but if you fill his belly with some brandy you won’t notice this. I can pretty much guarantee that none of your friends will have a set quite like this. Probably the quirkiest bar accesory you’ll ever find!

Dimensions: Clown – 24cm tall x 8cm in diameter; Shot glasses – 4.5cm tall x 4cm in diameter

Cake Stand – SOLD

26 Apr

Stainless steel cake stand

Stainless steel cake stand

I’m pretty sure that this is a standard catering cake stand, but I’ve never seen one for sale before, which for me makes it kind of special. I also really like the idea of using something so industrial in a home, plus it’s much larger than conventional ceramic cake plates, so you can fit more on it – I’m thinking a tower of red velvet cupcakes!

Dimensions: 33cm in diameter x 16cm high

Price: R200

Zippo Display Cabinet

Zippo display cabinet

Zippo display cabinet

Ok, before you all think I’m losing my marbles,  there’s definitely some wierd appeal to this Zippo display cabinet. I’m selling it on behalf of a  friend who’s a serious collector of all sorts of beautiful retro pieces. Her finds range from stupidly expensive deco couches to an impressive collection of small objets that she houses in an assortment of display cabinets, this Zippo cabinet being one of them. The advantage of this type of case (aside from its quirk factor) is that it has a bulb that lights up whatever you choose to display (look how great Niall’s pig looks!). It also has a rotating shelf that’s a little temperamental, but with a bit of oil will probably glide smoothly. These cabinets sell for suprisingly high prices on some sites, fetching as much as $600.

Dimensions: 68cm tall x 35cm wide

Price: R1200

Scandanavian Teapot, Milk Jug and Sugar Bowl – SOLD

18 Apr

Gense teapot with Danish milk jug & sugar bowl

Gense teapot with Danish milk jug & sugar bowl

I think it’s pretty obvious by the number of pics I took of this teapot (there were more – I deleted some!) that I’m more than a little bit in love with it! I can’t believe it’s 60 years old and in such mint condition. There’s a very small ding in the body of the pot, but otherwise it’s very clean – it looks like it could have been made yesterday. It was manufactured by Swedish company, Gense, and appears in their 1950s catalogue, although one site I read said they thought it was made earlier (based on the art deco style).  I bought the accompanying milk jug and sugar bowl with the teapot, but they’re not made by the same people, although being Danish, they are from the same part of the world, and obviously had similar design influences. I’m sure I’ve said it before, but this time I really, really mean it – this has to be the coolest teapot I’ve sold to date! A little bit of my heart goes with whoever takes this set home.

Dimensions: Teapot – 15cm tall x 13cm in diameter; Milk jug – 9cm tall x 7cm in diameter; Sugar bowl – 7cm tall x 9cm in diameter

Price: R320 for the set

Collection of Handbags – SOLD

17 Apr

The person who used to own these handbags clearly had a bit of a fetish – she must have had close to 100 bags!  Not being able to buy that many bags I had to be a little discerning, and these were some of my favourites. I don’t think any of them are particularly old, or of a seriously high quality, but each of them has something special going for them. My favourites are probably the yellow clutch bag  and the patchwork leather bag. The clutch bag has some wear where the vinyl has worn through as well as one or two marks on the inside of the purse, but the rest of the bags are in pretty much perfect nick (although they do have a bit of a mothball smell to them!).

Note: The patchwork handbag is the only leather bag

Dimensions & Prices:

  • Yellow clutch – R70 (32cm long x 17cm wide)
  • Leather patchwork handbag – R150 (28cm long x 18cm wide)
  • Red handbag – R100 (25cm long x 20cm wide – across the middle)
  • Oxblood handbag – R100 (25cm long x 20cm wide)
  • Brown handbag – R100 (28cm long x 20cm wide)
