Small wood framed mirror

Despite being quite small I really like this wood framed mirror. It reminds me of the type of mirror that would have been in the toilet of an old SA Railways train. There’s a bit of wear to the varnish on the wooden frame, and some slight marks on the mirror, but no serious damage. The back of the mirror is very naively finished so I’m assuming that there would have been something covering the back at some point. This is a nice simple piece that would look great hung in a small bathroom or dressing room.

Art deco beveled mirror

It’s becoming harder and harder to find these art deco mirrors, so even though this mirror is quite worn, I was still super-happy to have found it! The wear isn’t that visible in the photos – you can see that bits of the silver have perished around the edge of the mirror, but there’s also a slight haziness to the glass that’s come with age. But the positives more than outweigh the wear and tear! It has the loveliest art deco motif which looks to be from the earlier art deco period (1920s-1940s), a great bevelled edge, and what looks like its original chain. This isn’t the largest or the most ornate of mirrors, but it’s still a really beautiful example of an authentic art deco piece.

Despite being quite an old- fashioned piece, I think that this mirror would probably prove fairly versatile, fitting in just as well in a contemporary-styled home as it would in one with a more classical decor. Both the mirror and the frame are in good condition – I suspect that it’s been hanging on the wall that I took it off of for a good few years without ever having been interfered with (probably the best thing that you can do for a mirror is leave it alone, just giving it the occasional wipe from time to time).

A classic piece that has the potential to make quite an impact in the right setting.

Small framed bevelled mirror

This is probably one of the smallest mirrors that I’ve sold to date, but it’s also one of the loveliest (in an understated kind of way!). There’s something about the combination of the plain black frame and the thick bevelled edge that I find really appealing, although it’s probably the bevel that’s the most exciting – it really is quite unusual to find such a wide edge on a bevelled mirror. The back of the frame leaves a bit to be desired, but that’s not the part that you’re going to see, plus it shows that the mirror has a bit of age to it.

This is a special mirror, but it is small so is going to need the right space to show it off properly. I can see it hanging above a crisp white basin in a guest loo, or paired with a  palm stand in an entrance hall, but I suppose it would work well in any small space.

Frameless retro mirror

l love the classic shape of this retro frameless mirror! It’s the same shape you find in the brass-framed mirrors that I love so much, and it’s also a shape you see echoed in a lot of retro ceramics. Sadly though by the time this mirror made its way to me it had long since been parted with its wooden backing, so we (I say ‘we’, but of course I mean DIY king, Justin) replaced the missing wood with a nice thick piece of chipboard which does the job just fine! This is the perfect dressing mirror for a bedroom or a bathroom, or any room in the house really. It’s a great piece that will add a bit of understated style wherever you choose to hang it.

This is probably one of the most expensive mirrors that I’ve sold relative to its size, but I really, really wanted it so after weeks of trying to haggle with the owner I caved and gave him his (rather high) price! The mirror belonged to his wife and she really loved it so wouldn’t let it sell for less than what she thought it was worth. Which is fair enough I suppose, because it really is quite special! In fact, part of its attraction is its size – somehow the frame is more appealing  because it’s so large relative to the actual mirror. There’s some very minor wear to the frame, but all in all it’s in excellent condition. This mirror would look great hanging above a small basin in a bathroom, or as part of a collection of mirrors in a lounge or bedroom.

This is the largest mirror in this style that I’ve ever come across – it really is quite impressive when it’s hanging on a wall! Plus it’s in really great condition, which is quite unusual with these old mirrors – often bits of the frame are cracked, and more often than not the mirror itself is not in great shape (although that doesn’t tend to bother me too much). There’s some very minor wear to the silvering, but aside from that, the mirror really does seem to be in mint condition. A great statement piece for an entrance hall or bathroom – in fact it’s so tall you could probably use it as a dressing mirror for getting ready in the morning. A fantastic mirror that I would be proud to hang in my own home!

Wood framed bevelled mirror

I still have to put a chain on the back, but this wooden framed mirror would look great hanging above a sink in a bathroom, or above a chest of drawers in a bedroom. I love its thick wooden frame, which is beautifully made with dovetailed corners, and its nice wide bevel. There’s some wear to the silvering, which shows that it’s got a bit of age, but I quite like this type of wear and tear – a cliche I know, but I think it gives it character! A nice, quality piece that will add a bit of warmth to a space.

I’m not quite sure where a mirror like this would have come from? Perhaps a hotel, or someone’s dressing room? The overhead light does it make it rather unusual, but also practical – a light would make sure that your eyeliner’s in the right place so that you don’t look like a clown when you leave the house! The wooden frame’s in decent nick, and oddly I quite like the shape of the wooden recess that houses the bulb. The mirror itself has a bit of wear, but nothing too serious. With a bit of imagination this mirror could look great, it just needs the right home and the right home owner!

The style of this lovely hand-held vanity mirror has a strong sense of art nouveau about it, but it might also be from the later art deco period. Art nouveau was fashionable during the late 1800s (1890-1910), and art deco first became popular in France during the 1920s, and later in the ’30s and ’40s in the rest of Europe and America – but regardless of which style it’s in it’s definitely got a good few years behind it! There’s not a lot of information out there, but it looks like it might be French in origin and would originally have had a back cover that screwed on holding the mirror in place – I suspect that the current mirror (which is glued in) is not the original mirror. I’m not sure how practical hand-held mirrors are these days, so  I thought it might be an idea to hang it on a wall. It’s a bit small to stand alone, but grouped with a  collection of vintage mirrors it would really stand out. This really is a lovely piece that deserves pride of place in someones’ home!
