I’m very lucky in that most of the items I put on Mint sell pretty quickly, but now and again some beauts get left behind. Above are the few pieces of glass that haven’t sold over the past few months (now at discounted prices!).

Set of Dessert Glasses – SOLD

11 Apr

Set of 6 French dessert glasses

Set of 6 French dessert glasses

I’ve sold quite a few of these sets over the years, although I’m not sure that I’ve sold the amber glasses before (they come in red, green and amber). I think they may have been produced by Luminarc – a subsidary of the world’s largest glass and crystal manufacturers. Luminarc was established in 1948 and produce glass for everyday household use. There’s nothing particularly fancy about the brand, or these glasses, but I’ve always really liked the simplicity of this design. The set is in mint condition and would make great dessert or breakfast glasses.

Dimensions: 8.5cm tall x 8.5cm in diameter

Price: R120 for the set

Murano Style Bowl

10 Apr

Murano-style bowl

Murano-style bowl

I bought this biomorphic bowl from the same collection as as the lovely pair of ashtrays I featured last week. After doing a bit of reading up it would seem that the great shimmer effect is the result of the inclusion of aventurine in the glass – a form of quartz, characterised by its translucency and the presence of platy minerals that give it a shimmering or glistening effect. The use of aventurine in glass-making was popular in Italy during the 50s and 60s, so I’m assuming that this is when and where this dish dates from. It’s quite an unusual piece – it could be used as an ashtray, but I think it was probably just designed as a display piece. The perfect gift for a collector of Italian glass.

Note: There is a chip along the rim of the dish which I only noticed after I had taken the pics

Dimensions: 16cm long x 14cm wide x 4cm high

Price: R130

Cut Glass Vase – SOLD

3 Apr

Cut glass vase

Cut glass vase

This isn’t the largest vase, but it is one of my very favourite designs. I don’t anything about these vases – they’re quite similar to a style of vase by Luminarc, but of a much higher quality. I’ve said that this is cut glass, but I have my suspicions that it might actually be crystal – it’s quite a weighty piece. A beautifully finished vase, in mint condition.

Dimensions: 22cm tall x 8cm in diameter

Price: R140

Pair of Murano Style Ashtrays – SOLD

3 Apr

Pair of Murano style ashtrays

Pair of Murano style ashtrays

Maybe it’s just because I have the same ashtray in my collection (a lovely blue one), but I think that this pair are quite beautiful. They have a very organic shape, almost like a sea anemone, and I love the silver in the glass. Sadly the red ashtray has a chip on the one edge, but because of the shape of the glass and the way that it shimmers, you can’t really see it – I only noticed it when I was cleaning the glass (i.e. you can feel it, but can’t see it). I don’t know enough about glass to say with 100% certainty, but I’m pretty sure that these ashtrays are Murano glass. Whatever their origin, they really are a striking pair!

Dimensions: Each ashtray measures 14cm in diameter x 6cm high

Price: Red ashtray – R160; Green ashtray – R200
