Hand-Blown Glass Vase – SOLD

The shape of this vase really appeals to me – it’s all lopsided and wonky, and very clearly hand-blown. You can almost see the glass-blower’s heat melting the glass! I don’t know if it has any age to it, although it would have fitted in perfectly with my mom’s house in the ’70s, but I don’t think it’s that important if you love the design the way I do. Despite clearly being a vase, I think flowers  would take away rather than add to the beauty of this piece – the proportions would be all wrong. In my mind it would work best simply as a display piece. A striking vase that I would love to hang on to!

Set of 6 Venetian Shot Glasses – SOLD

31 Jan

Set of 6 shot glasses

Set of 6 shot glasses

These glasses have a bit of a sad tale to them! I bought them as part of a liqueur set at an auction towards the end of last year. They had the most beautiful matching decanter that was in perfect nick, so I sat for ages waiting for the lot to come up and was over the moon when my bid was successful. I was proud to show them off at the last Wonder Market, until a wild gust of wind toppled the decanter and it smashed into a thousand pieces. I have to admit that I was close to tears! But at least the glasses survived! To the best of my knoweldge these glasses are Venetian – this style of applied flowers is typical of Venetian glass. There’s a fair amount of wear and tear to the gold gilding, but there are no apparent chips in the glass. It would have been wonderful to have the complete set, but I think that these glasses can stand by themselves. Definitely way cooler than any set you can buy today!

Dimensions: each glass measures 6.5cm tall x 4cm in diameter (at their widest)

Small Murano Vase – SOLD

30 Jan

Small Murano vase

Small Murano vase

You’re not going to get a bunch of flowers into this petite vase, but it would look sweet with a single-stem, or just as a display piece. I love the thick bottomed base and the slightly snobby angle of the lip of the glass, and of course it’s great that it still has its original Murano sticker. Often glass looks like Murano, but without expert knowledge on the subject it’s hard to say with certainty that it’s the real McCoy. With a manufacturer’s sticker there’s no doubting its authenticity. A classic piece of glass in original condition.

Note: There are no chips in the glass, but there is a small mark on the inside of the vase that can’t be reached to clean properly

Dimensions: 20cm tall x 5cm in diameter (at its widest)

Price: R130

Collection of Trinket Boxes – SOLD

27 Jan

Collection of trinket boxes

Collection of trinket boxes

How lovely do these boxes look grouped together – inspires me to start a collection! All three of them are quite special, but the star for me is the cut-glass art deco box. It’s a serious piece of glass of a very high quality- just look at the detail in those beviled edges. And I love the fact that it’s so simple. Such an unassuming piece with some serious style to it. It does have a very minor chip on the underside of the lid – so minor in fact that I didn’t spot it on first examining it, but other than that it’s in excellent condition.

The cut-glass dish that almost looks like a vintage perfume bottle does have a bit of damage to it. Some of the points have very small nicks, and the red finish has chipped in places. But it’s still a very beautiful piece! I particularly like the handle which is so elegantly cut. A fine piece of glass that would look super-classy displayed on a dressing table or in a bathroom.

The lucite box has a seriously cool name attached to it: “Plastic Creations of Hollywood”! Lucite is a type of plastic that became fashionable after the Second World War when it overtook bakelite in popularity. It was often used in lieu of glass as it was less expensive and easier to work with, but had the same clarity as that of glass. Sadly over time, this box has lost some its clarity and its age can be seen in the lines that appear like minor cracks inside the lid (see pics under ‘more’). That being said it’s in reasonably good nick for its age, and would still make quite a statement.

Dimensions: Art deco cut-glass box – 9.5cm long x 8cm wide x 8.5cm tall; Cut-glass box with ruby detail -10cm in diameter x 9cm tall; Lucite box – 12cm long x 7cm wide x 6cm tall

Price: Art deco cut-glass box – R260; Cut-glass box with ruby detail – R200; Lucite box – R120

Pair of Moulded Glass Vases – SOLD

24 Jan

Pair of French vases

Pair of French/Italian vases

I don’t think my amateur photography does this pair of moulded glass vases any justice! To really see them at their best you have to fill them with water and a fresh bunch of flowers – the angles of the glass come to life with the reflections of the water. I have a very similar vase that’s a permanent feature on my glass & chrome coffee table in my lounge (see pics under ‘more’), and I just love it! The glass is moulded, as opposed to cut, so it’s not particularly fine glass, but I love the shape and generous volume of these vases. Definitely a lot cooler than any vase you can pick up at Mr Price or Boardmans!

Dimensions: Larger Italian vase – 25cm tall x13cm in diameter; Large French vase – 24cm tall x 11cm in diameter

Price: R150 each
