Lancaster and Sons Planter – SOLD

14 Mar

Lancaster & Sons planter

Lancaster & Sons planter

I have to admit that I had never heard of Lancaster & Sons before purchasing this lovely planter, but I’m assuming that they’re a name with serious clout because the collector I bought this from said that she originaly paid a whopping R600 for it! The only information I can find on this ceramic house is that they operated in Hanley (England) from 1899 untill 1944, so you’re looking at a pot that’s at least 70 years old, or thereabout. Some of the glaze has worn off in places, but the bold design is still quite striking. The naivety of the design is a little reminiscent of the works of Clarice Cliff and Susie Cooper, but that probably has to do with the period that it dates from more than anything else. The simple design and strong colours of the pattern contrast beautifully with the more delicate shape of the pot. A great piece for a collector of ceramics, or someone with a taste for the unusual.

Pot Plant Stand – SOLD

6 Mar

Yellow leaf pot plant stand

Yellow leaf pot plant stand

I was a little heart-broken when I got this pot stand back from my powder coaters and realised what a shoddy job they had done. It’s probably the nicest design I’ve seen, and I was so looking forward to seeing it brought back to life, but sadly the paint seems to have bubbled giving it a very rough surface. I had it done over Christmas, and wasn’t going to sell it because of the bad paint job, so have had it on my balcony ever since. But the other day I caught myself admiring it, which made me think I might have been a bit too judgemental – it is a great colour, and I do love the leaf shelves- so I thought, lets’ let the people decide if it’s worthy or not! And if no one wants to take it home with them, it looks quite lovely on my sun-filled balcony, so it’s a win-win really!

Dimensions: 75cm tall

Price: R220

P.S. I had to share an email I received yesterday from the lovely Lyn from Memory Lane: “Your large green bottle: When my parents immigrated, they bought a garage and petrol station. The petrol pumps were operated by hand as we had no electricity in Brentwood Park (just outside Benoni). The  green bottles we used for topping up the battery water for our customers,  when we had to refill them we had to go to a factory where they made icecream and they sold us the distilled water in their bottles for which we paid a deposit.”

Oversized Enamel Jug – SOLD

20 Feb

Ovesrized enamel jug

Ovesrized enamel jug

This is without a doubt the largest enamel jug I’ve ever come across! It’s so large that I couldn’t squeeze a matchbox into the frame to give you some idea of its relative size, but believe me it’s stupidly big. The measurements on the inside of the jug are in pints: it holds 16 pints which is the equivalent of about 9 litres. In practical terms it’s more along the lines of a bucket than a jug you’d use in the kitchen. I have absolutely no idea what it’s original funtion would have been, but the only thing I can really see it being used for is as a planter. It would definitely add a bit of interest to your potted garden!

Please note: there’s a fair amount of staining on the inside of the jug which doesn’t show up clearly in the photos – not a problem if you’re going to plant a succulent in it.

Dimensions: 29cm high x 22cm in diameter

Price: R170

Drostdy Vase – SOLD

23 Nov

Drostdy vase/planter

Drostdy vase/planter

One of the things I like most about Drostdy ware is how it almost looks like someone made it in their pottery class – it has that nice home-made feel to it which is unusual for manufactured pottery. I think that this vase could double as a planter, just place a few stones in the bottom and you’re good to go. It does have some minor cracks around the lip and on the base, but I’ve checked it and it doesn’t leak, so it’s still useable as a vase – but if it were mine to keep I’d put a collection of small succulents in it and display it on a table on my balcony.

Wooden Municipal Benches – SOLD

17 Nov

Short wooden municipal bench with pot plants

Short wooden municipal bench with pot plants

These old wooden benches are definitely what you would term ‘rustic’, which normally isn’t my cup of tea at all, but I really, really like them! They’re old municipal benches, and they haven’t been very well looked after – in fact I suspect that they’ve been left out in the rain. They’re very weathered, and some are a wee bit rickety, but they’re still perfectly functional. Leave them as is and use them for displaying pot plants, or give them a coat of varnish or some brightly coloured paint and pair them up with  a table on your verandah. I’d say the shorter bench would fit a six seater table, and the longer an eight seater. Whatever you choose to use them for they’ll definitely add a bit of character to your home!

Note: I have six of the short benches available, and 3 of the long benches.

Dimensions: Short bench -  35cm wide x 45cm high x 180cm long; Long bench – 35cm wide x 45cm high x 240cm long

Price: Short bench – R250 each (6 available); Long bench – R300 each (3 available)
