Philips Food Processor

Philips Food Processor (Chopper)

Philips Food Processor (Chopper)

I’m amazed by this Philips food processor from the late 1970s – it still has all of its original attachments! Normally by the time they reach me they’ve been reduced to simple mixers, but this machine has its mincer, blender, chopper and mixer bits, plus it’original manual (albeit in pieces!). I haven’t tried it out, but it looks to me like the mincer attachment might be damaged, but aside from that the rest of the pieces seem intact. The plastic’s a bit yellowed and scratched im places, but the wear doen’t detract too much from the overall appearance. I really like the angle of the base, which gives it a disctinctive retro feel. If you’re a committed cook then this is the machine for you!

Retro Toshiba Juicer

Toshiba juicer

Toshiba juicer

I love the look of this juicer from Japanese manufacturer’s Toshiba. Looking at the wear to the rubber parts, and the style of the Toshiba logo I’d say that this machine dates to the early 1970s, but I can’t say for certain. The juicer is very clean, with very little wear and tear. I love the orange perspex, and the apple sticker’s a real winner. The juicer also has an attachment for squeezing citrus fruits, but I think it’d probably be easier to squeeze your oranges by hand, unless you were going into mass production. As with most of these old juicers, the opening for your fruit is quite small, so the obvious disadvantage is that you have to cut your fruit up quite small   – but on the plus side, it’s much cooler looking than most of the juicers you can buy today. The perfect kitchen accessory for summer!

Vintage Desk Lamp

Vintage desk lamp

The base and hood of this retro desk lamp are a bit worse for wear, which is often the case with these older lights, but despite the damage it’s still a functional light with great appeal. I have a bit of a thing for these bendy brass arms – there’s just something very cool about them! This lamp is in nowhere near perfect nick, but it’s about what you’d expect for it’s age and will still look great on a bedside table or desk.

Please note: I couldn’t take photos of the damage to the shade (it didn’t show up in the pics) – there’s a small ding on the one side and a few scrapes and scratches.

Dimensions: Height (fully extended) – 40cm; Diameter of shade – 12cm; diameter of base – 16cm

Kenwood Chef

Kenwood Chef Model A701A

Kenwood Chef Model A701A

As with most old Kenwoods, this machine’s been put to good use in its time. Somone’s given it a bit of a naive facelift by re-painting the area where the bowl sits, and the Kenwood badge has somehow been melted on the edge. It’s also missing a blue button on the top surface, which I have to be honest does upset me a wee bit! But I suppose for a machine that’s hitting 40 it’s not in too bad a shape! My boyfriend and I made delicious brownies in it the other day using the famous K hook and it worked like a bomb!

1950s Eskimo Hairdryer – SOLD

1950s Eskimo hairdryer model 786

1950s Eskimo hairdryer model 786

This is definitely one of the more unusual pieces that I’ve featured on Mint! It’s a 1950s Eskimo hairdryer with a stand that can be attached to a wall or table. It’s probably the coolest looking hairdryer I’ve ever seen, but sadly (and I say this with a heavy heart), it can’t be used in South Africa. Electricity in SA is 230 volts, and this machine is 115 volts. Apparently you can get a converter, but that seems a bit extreme just for a hairdryer. Also in my experience vintage hairdryers aren’t nearly powerful enough, which can be a bit frustrating when you’re in a rush. So at the end of the day, this beautiful machine will really only be useful as a display piece. The obvious choice would be for a stylish hair salon, but I think it would also be a great addition to the foyer of an ad agency – it really is an impressive piece of design.

Dimensions: Hairedryer – 20cm long x 25cm tall x 12cm wide; Base -12cm wide x 15cm long
