Denby Lidded Dish – SOLD

16 May

Denby lidded dish

Denby lidded dish

Denby has a long proud history in England. The company first started producing pottery in 1809 when a clay deposit in Derbyshire was found to be of a very high quality, and continues to be a prolific manufacturer of stoneware pottery today. This brown and blue Homstead pattern was introduced in 1948 and was popular right through to the ’80s. Looking at the backstamp I think that this piece probably dates to the 1970s. It’s in pretty good nick, with no chips or cracks to speak of, although there are some scratches on the lid of the dish. A handsome, practical piece that can go from your oven straight to the dinner table.

Dimensions: 28cm long x 20cm wide x 9cm high (with lid on)

Price: R140

Stavangerflint Plate – SOLD

15 May

Stavangerflint Flamingo plate by Inge Waage

Stavangerflint Flamingo plate by Inge Waage

I seem to have some magnetic attraction to Stavangerflint pottery at the moment, but that’s not a bad thing at all – their designs are just wonderful! This plate was designed by Inger Waage sometime during the 1950s when she was the head of the handicrafts division at Stavangerflint, where she worked until 1979. I love the contrast of the solid yellow band with the finely inked flowers. There’s a small amount of wear to the glaze in places, but overall the plate’s in very good condition. A beautifully illustrated pattern from one of Norway’s female design icons.

P.S. Check out this site for some great examples of designs by Inger Waage

Dimensions: 24.5cm in diameter x 3cm high

Mikasa Coffee Set

10 May

Mikasa Duplex side plates by Ben Seibel

Mikasa Duplex coffee cups by Ben SiebelMikasa Duplex coffee cups by Ben Seibel
It was a sad moment when I got home the other day and realised that a number of the saucers and side plates in this set had broken on my travels – I had to hold myself back from shedding a tear. Normally I wouldn’t sell a set as incomplete as this (6 cups, 3 saucers and five side plates), but there was no way I was sending this lot to the charity shop! It was made by a company called Mikasa, and the design is called Duplex, presumably referencing the double-story style of the cups. Duplex was produced in a variety of colours and patterns, and it looks like the yellow version was named Trellis. Duplex was designed by architect cum industrial designer Ben Seibel, who worked as a freelance designer in America from the 1950s until his death in the ’80s. He designed Duplex in 1971. I love the cheerfulness of the design, but it also has a certain understated style – the way the cups sit on top of the saucers as opposed to in them (the middle of the saucers is raised instead of indented). It’s a real pity that my poor driving skills (I did go over one or two speed bumps a bit hurriedly!) destroyed such a great set, but at least all six cups remain, and I suppose its’the cups that count the most – who needs saucers!

Dimensions: Cups – 9cm in diameter x 7cm high; saucers -16cm in diameter; Sideplates -19cm in diameter

Price: R220

Stavangerflint Coffee Set – SOLD

4 May

Stavangerflint coffee set

Stavangerflint coffee set

When I first glance at an item it sometimes takes me a minute or two to decide whether it’s a vintage or contemporary design – for me that’s normally the sign of a strong design, one that’s stood the test of time. And that’s exactly what happened when I spotted this Stavangerflint coffee set (Norway). From the bit that I’ve read this pattern, Lajla, was first produced in 1960 (50 years ago!), but it really does look like it could have been made yesterday. I love the folksy print and the subtle use of colour that saves it from being a bit too demure. The set is in excellent condition, although it’s been reduced to a set of four, presumably from six. It’s a bit of a curious set in that included with the cups and saucers is what appears to be an ice bucket! I can’t imagine why you’d need ice with your coffee, so I’m thinking that maybe it was used for some other purpose unique to the Norwegians. Personally, I think it’d make a great holder for cutlery – wouldn’t it look so sweet sitting on your kitchen counter? A delightful coffee set with a respected Scandinavian name attached to it.

Dimensions: Coffee pot – 8cm in diameter x 22cm tall; Cups – 8cm in diameter x 7cm tall; Saucers – 14cm in diameter; Side plates – 18cm in diameter; Milk jug – 8cm in diameter x 9cm tall; Sugar bowl – 8cm in diameter x 10.5cm tall; Ice bucket – 10cm in diameter x 11cm tall

Price: R320 for the set

Green’s Gripstand Mixing Bowl – SOLD

3 May

Green's Gripstand Mixing Bowl

Green's Gripstand Mixing Bowl

Green’s Gripstand Mixing Bowl sets the standard when it comes to bowls for mixing batter. I don’t know what it is, but there’s something very appealing about these bowls – perhaps it’s because they look a bit like old fashioned jelly moulds! They’re pretty collectible, and there are a number of modern knock offs floating around. There’re also vintage bowls produced by different manufacturers who obviously realised the strength of this design back in the day. This is the smaller of the sizes these bowls come in, but it’s still reasonably large. There’re some marks on the inside of the bowl that don’t show up that well in the pics, but otherwise it’s a fairly clean piece. A classic design that will see you through years of baking.

Dimensions: 24cm in diameter x 11cm high

Price: R150
