Carlton Ware Platter

Carlton Ware platter

Carlton Ware platter

This Carlton Ware boomerang dish is in great nick for its age – it dates to sometime between 1958 and 1961, which makes it in the region of 50 years old. There’s a small fleabite mark on the rim, but otherwise it’s a very clean piece. The pattern is called Convolvulus, which is a fancy name for Morning Glory. I love the shape of the platter and the soft graduating lilac colour. A great piece for a collector of this great British ceramic house.

Dimensions: 36cm at its longest x 12cm at its widest

Pair of Bubble Glass Ashtrays

Pair of bubble glass ashtrays

Pair of bubble glass ashtrays

I’m fairly certain that these ashtrays are murano glass, possibly by Galliano Ferro who seemed to produce a lot of the bubble glass in Italy, but without a manufacturer’s sticker it’s always hard to say. The colours are a lot more subdued than you normally find, but I think the more conservative tones make them an easy fit for a contemporary home. There are no chips in the glass, but the underside of both ashtrays are quite scratched (see pics under ‘more’). A stylish pair of bowls that will look great on display.

Set of Four Coffee Cups and Saucers – SOLD

Set of 4 Tams coffee cups & saucers

Set of 4 Tams coffee cups & saucers

I don’t really know anything about Tams (England) pottery, but looking at the style of these cups and saucers I’d say they date to the early 1970s. They have that classic ’70s olive green glaze and the repititive style of the leaf motif is also very much of the period. They’re in great nick, and are a nice decent size – so often older cups are just a bit too small to be practical. A great retro set in near mint condition.

Dimensions: Cup- 8cm high x 8cm in diameter; Saucer – 14.5cm in diameter

Price: R95 for the set

Breville Snackwich Maker

Breville snackwich maker

Breville snackwich maker

Breville is an Australian brand that was started in the early 1930s. According to Wikipedia they invented the original sandwich maker, the precursor to the electric snackwich machine. I know the brand through my boyfriend who’s a bit of a coffee fanatic and holds their coffee grinders in high esteem, so I know that it’s a quality brand. But that’s not the reason I bought this machine – I bought it because of it’s quirky control dial which reminds me of a lotto ball! You roll the red ball from one to five to set the strength, from light to dark toast. There’re some scratches on the top of the machine and the red ball is a little sticky to roll, but it still functions perfectly well, although some of the coating has worn on the snachwich plates so you may have to use a bit more butter. It’s a lot more modern than a lot of the other snackwich machines I’ve bought, but it’s a quality product with an interesting look to it.

Japanese Cow Teapot – SOLD

16 May

Japanese cow milk jug

Japanese cow teapot

I’d never heard of Otagiri before finding this crazy teapot, but it would seem that they have quite a following and are considered fairly collectible. A lot of the images I’ve found are for character teapots and milk jugs in the shapes of owls, cats, pigs – a variety of animals – so clearly this was a popular line for them. The company closed in the mid ’90s, and I think that this cow teapot was manufactured about 15 years before then, sometime in the early 1980s. It’s in great nick – it even has its original foil sticker, so I think it was probably kept for display purposes only. A quirky teapot that’s sure to get one or two remarks the next time you have friends round for a cuppa!

Dimensions: 24cm long x 10cm wide x 15cm high
