Seeing Double

6 Feb

I’m very lucky to have a solid base of very dedicated supporters who follow Mint, and so to keep up with the demand I’ve decided to try and post four items a day going forward. It might be problematic in terms of sourcing sufficient stock, but I’m going to try my darndest! So from today onwards (holding thumbs) I’m going to be posting one item at 07h00, another at 08h00 and two items just before 09h00.

Happy shopping!

Pair of Art Deco Brushes – SOLD

Pair of art deco brushes

Pair of art deco brushes

Now I know most of us won’t have thought to equip our homes or travelling bags with clothes brushes, but they can be very handy items to own. A year or so ago I was visiting my sister and a particularly well-groomed friend who had stayed the night whipped out a lint brush to get rid of the flecks on his black coat (a JHB icy winter morning!). And while I have to say that I was well-impressed, I would have been even more impressed had he pulled out a beautiful art deco brush as opposed to his plastic version from Clicks! The perfect Valentine’s gift for the man (or lady) who has it all.

Pair of Johnson Bros Serving Dishes

Pair of Johnson Bros serving dishes

I love the name of this pattern by Johnson Bros – Snowhite! Johnson Bros actually produced a number of different patterns with this same name, so I’m not really sure what the inspiration was, but it has a very sweet ring to it. I love the 1950s pastel blue of the lids, and the shape of the handles gives them a a very retro feel. There’s a small mark on the inside of the one dish, but otherwise they’re in near mint condition. Perfect for keeping your dinner warm on the table.

Set of Vintage Kitchen Canisters – SOLD

6 Feb

Set of Kitchen Canisters

Set of Kitchen Canisters

This unusual set of kitchen canisters have seen a fair bit of use in their time, and they have the battle scars to prove it – the black finish on the wood is worn away in places, with a few scratches here and there. That being said I’d guess that they’re at least 50 years old, so I don’t think they’re doing too badly. I’m also not sure how practical they are given that they’re made of a thin plywood, but sometimes you have to forgo functionality for outstanding good looks! They really are a very handsome set indeed – probably one of the most unique, and coolest looking sets I’ve had the good luck to happen across. I paid a fair bit for this set, which unfortuately in-turns means I need to sell them on at a high price, but I think that they’re worth it – I’d consider myself very lucky if I came across another set like this anytime soon.

Note: This set would originally have had a fourth container; i.e. one of the canisters is misisng

Dimensions: Large – 19cm tall x 16.5cm wide; Medium – 17cm tall x 14.5cm wide; Small – 12cm tall x 10.5cm wide

Price: R420 for the set

Brass Peacock Lamp – SOLD

Brass peacock lamp

Brass peacock lamp

I don’t think that these photos really do this lamp any justice – I couldn’t get far back enough to get a full shot of this lovely peacock! I know some of you out there might think I’m crazy, but I think that this lamp is very cool indeed – unfortunately so did my brother when we first spotted it, and seeing as I tend to buy a lot more than him, I relented and let him take it home. A few years down the line, and my brother’s decided to de-clutter his life so has returned the peacock to its rightful home: Mint. There are a few issues with the lamp – I’d prefer a black switch to the white one it currently has, but I don’t think that’s a massive job to sort out. The second issue is the choice of shade – I actually don’t think it looks too bad with a small round globe, but you could also go the more kitsch route and get one of those tiny angled shade’s made up – you know the ones that look like they should have tassles dangling off the bottom? But I think given the fact that it’s so over the top to begin with, it might be better to go with something simple. It’s not the most detailed of portraits of a peacock, but it’s shortcomings are more than made up for by it’s fabulous fan of feathers – quite dramatic. The perfect bedside lamp for a quirky, character-filled guest bedroom.
