1960s Sideboard – SOLD

1960s wooden sideboard

1960s wooden sideboard

I often worry that things look nicer in photos than they do in real life (I don’t want people to be disappointed when their goods arrive in the post!), but the opposite is true of this 1960s sideboard. I bought it from the same home as the coffee table I featured yesterday, and it’s received the same love and care – with the exception of a small area that’s been filled, the sideboard is in pretty much immaculate condition. There are so many good things to say about this piece, but for me the most interesting feature is the way the drawers are recessed from the cupboards. It’s hard to see in the pics, but they sit about 3cm back from the cupboard doors. And of course the beautifully crafted wooden handles are fantastic! The blue cutlery drawer is also a great design feature – it contrasts so nicely with the more subdued tones of the wood. For me, this is probably the nicest piece of furniture that I’ve sold on Mint to date – certainly in terms of quality it’s way up there. I think that to have something similar manufactured today, you’d be looking at paying at least R10 000, and even then it’s doubtful that you’d get the same level of craftsmanship. A fantastic peice of design that’s stood the test of time.

Vintage Swan Teapot – SOLD

29 Feb

Swan Brand aluminium teapot

Swan Brand aluminium teapot

I love the etchings that Swan (England) decorated their teapots with, they really are quite beautiful. I think that the handle and lid pull are made of bakelite, while the body is aluminium – not ideal for regular use, but fine for the occasional tea party, or for display purposes. The inside of the pot is quite tarnished, as is the bakelite, but the part that matters the most – the body of the pot – is in pretty good nick. The perfect pot for an iced tea cocktail!

Cast-Iron Pot with Divider – SOLD

Cast-iron pot with dividers

Cast-iron pot with dividers

Over the years I’ve sold a number of these lovely enameled cast-iron pots. Aside from the fact that they’re solid pots designed to last, they’re also quite lovely to look at – there’s something very appealing about the yellow and blue combination. There’s a bit of wear to the inside edge of the divider, but the rest of the pot is in mint condition. The perfect pot for serving up your greens.

Enamel Colander – SOLD

Enamel colander

Enamel colander

This lovely white colander with red trim came from the same spot as the red speckled colander I featured earlier this week. Again, this isn’t vintage enamelware, and as such is not quite as solid as some of the older enamel you find, but it’s a nice clean piece (colanders can get a bit grimy with age!) and is still very attractive. If you don’t have this essential kitchen item, now’s the time to buy one!

1960s Teak Coffee Table – SOLD

1960s teak coffee table with magazine rack

1960s teak coffee table with magazine rack

I can’t say for certain, but I’m fairly sure that this coffee table was manufactured in the 1960s by Parker Furniture. Parker was established in 1935, and produced high quality furniture for the Australian domestic market. In the 1950s & ’60s the company was at the leading edge of Scandinavian-inspired design, a style generally referred to as Danish Modern. This coffee table with built-in magazine rack is in mint condition. It looks to be made of teak, although it might be a teak veneer – the wood is in such good nick that it’s hard to tell whether it’s a veneer or solid wood. I love the subtle retro curve of the top, and the magazine rack which is both practical and a great design feature – although you’d need to display your mags in a very orderly fashion! A beautifully crafted piece in superb condition.
