1960s Sideboard – SOLD
29 Feb
I often worry that things look nicer in photos than they do in real life (I don’t want people to be disappointed when their goods arrive in the post!), but the opposite is true of this 1960s sideboard. I bought it from the same home as the coffee table I featured yesterday, and it’s received the same love and care – with the exception of a small area that’s been filled, the sideboard is in pretty much immaculate condition. There are so many good things to say about this piece, but for me the most interesting feature is the way the drawers are recessed from the cupboards. It’s hard to see in the pics, but they sit about 3cm back from the cupboard doors. And of course the beautifully crafted wooden handles are fantastic! The blue cutlery drawer is also a great design feature – it contrasts so nicely with the more subdued tones of the wood. For me, this is probably the nicest piece of furniture that I’ve sold on Mint to date – certainly in terms of quality it’s way up there. I think that to have something similar manufactured today, you’d be looking at paying at least R10 000, and even then it’s doubtful that you’d get the same level of craftsmanship. A fantastic peice of design that’s stood the test of time.
